Ok, so tomorrow I'm going to replace the fuel line from fuel tank to fuel pump on my '68 Bug. I know how to do it, but I'm wondering if anyone here ever has already? Or know a bit about it so you can give me tips and stuff to watch for? Thanks in advance for any help rendered.

Are you talking about the entire hardline or just the flex sections at either end of the hardlines?

What type of hose are you using?

Double check hose diameters. VW used to do some crazy part bin swapping.

I've heard some good things about this site http://www.thesamba.com/vw/ for tips.

I'm not sure yet, Once I get the tank out in the morning I'm going to check to see if the hardline is clogged, if not, I'll leave it for now, If it is, hardline and flexlines.

For the exposed bits I'm going to use braided 1/4. It fits well and I've redone some of the fuel lines with it already. If I need to do the hardline I'll probably just go with rubber tubing because it will be protected.

Its a bitch to change it if you do have to. Compressed air with a section of old fuel line clamped to the gun and hard line can clear it out well. I've used flex line with smaller hard sections where it travels through sheetmetal to good effect if you need to replace it.

number one....disconnect the battery and have a fire extinguisher or something similar present. Fires happen (from experience) especially on cars with 50 year old wiring thats been hacked to bits.

If you are doing this clean out your fuel tank while you are there. Check the outlet to see if it has a mesh filter inside the tank and clean that. Water, meths then fuel flush the tank and leave to dry. A little meths in your first tank of fuel will disperse any water.

Make sure the flex line from the base of the tank to the hard line is long enough. If it is too short it will kink and block. I tried a short one thinking it would be better and then when you lower the tank the angle gets tight and pinches.

Use new fuel filters ( i use two of the cheap plastic ones with orange paper filters you can see, and change them every 2 months). Mount them near the axle tube, not in the engine bay where they melt and start fires.

If you still have hardline running through the fan housing its up to you if you reuse that, but you must have hardline where the fuel line passes through the engine tin.

If you are replacing all that line replace the stuff from the pump to the carb too. Take the lid off the carb, clean the bowl, blow out the idle and main jets ( a wooden cocktail stick is great for putting jets in holes). Make sure you tighten it back up so the bowl doesn't leak.

If its an electric fuel pump put a voltmeter over it and visually confirm it moves fluid. I fits mechanical try to get a fuel pressure gauge and confirm its working properly, you want 3-4lbs ! however if its 7lbs plus look at shimming your fuel pump out to drop it

Umm thats about it. Good luck!

I've done the fuel line from pump to carb, and the car was running just a couple days ago, then we took it on a joyride and now the fuel isn't getting from tank to fuel pump. So I'm gonna try to use an air compressor to blow the lines clean and if that doesn't work I'll end up buying new fuel line. Hoping for an easy fix but seeing as its this car, I doubt I'll get one. But I've got a few hours tomorrow and all day friday to do it.

Do everything you can to clean out the hardline that runs through the shifter tunnel. It is spot welded in and extremely difficult to remove. As long as it isn't leaking and you can (eventually) blow air through it you should be fine.

Hah, i built 2 motors in 9 months for mine so i feel your pain. Heres a hint, just buy the damm straight cut cam gear...cos the aluminium ones ain't worth sh1t!

To be honest its literally a pipe between the tank and the fuel pump...it should be an easy and quick fix.

Fingers crossed you get it sorted.
